There’s nothing like taking your boat out on the water on a sunny summer day. But before those idyllic moments can happen, you’ll need to get your boat ready for the boating season.  Like a car that hasn’t been used in a while, your boat needs some preparation before it can set sail. De-winterizing your boat will encourage a smooth transition back onto the water.  It could even increase your boat’s lifespan.  Here are some tips to get ready for boating season!

How to Get Your Boat Ready for Boating Season

Things you will need for your boat

Before you can get your boat ready for the water, you’ll need a few things. First, have the user’s manual accessible. This could come in handy when de-winterizing your boat.  You’ll also need to make sure all your registration and papers are up to date.  If you plan on fishing, make sure your fishing license is still valid.  Docking your boat at a marina may require you to secure a spot before it gets too crowded.  Having these things in order will allow you to enjoy time on the water once you’re done inspecting your boat.

Take an inventory

Since the last time you used your boat, you may have forgotten what items you have stored away. Make an inventory of all the things that you need and the things you have on your boat, especially safety equipment.  Update any items that need adjustment. For example, if your kid has grown a lot over the past few months, it is possible that they need a larger life jacket.

Check over your boat

1.Prepare your boat’s engine

The engine is one of the most important parts of the boat.  Take time to get it ready for use.  Change the oil if you did not do so before the winter.  Flush the cooling system and replace the anti-freeze with a 50/50 ratio of coolant to water.  Replace the batteries and check the fluid levels.  Make sure that cables, belts, and hoses are in good condition.  Perform an engine test.  Be aware that prepping your boat’s engine may take some time.

2.Test out all the electronics

Testing the electronic equipment before you get on the water will help ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable time.  Bring all the electronics back onto your boat, such as the GPS, compass, depth meter, etc. and test them out.  If anything doesn’t seem to be working properly, replace or repair it.

3. Check out the hull

Look at the hull for any chips, cracks, or blisters.  Repair any apparent damages.  If you notice that the hull is chalky, it could be indicative of oxidation.  To fix this, you’ll need to restore the boat’s gelcoat and maintain it throughout the season.  This is will prevent further oxidation.

4. Look over the canvas and vinyl

Check over your boat cover, seats, etc.  Look for tears, cracks, or mildew that may have appeared over the winter.  Clean the canvas and vinyl.

5.Give your boat a good cleaning

Polish the metal and teak to give your boat a sharp appearance.  It will also increase the longevity of the materials.  Give the interior of your boat a good scrub down.  Remove the dirt and debris that may have accumulated over the winter.  Make sure that the windshield wipers are replaced, if needed.

Make sure your boat is protected

Boating is a fun, but potentially dangerous pastime. Make sure that you have insurance on your boat in case you get into an accident or something unexpected happens.  Insurance will help protect you financially in the event something goes wrong. Talking to an insurance agent is the best way to determine what type of coverage and how much coverage you will need for your boat.  Get your insurance figured out before you take your boat out on the water.
