This time of year is huge for teens – prom, graduation, and summer!  With all this impending excitement, it’s important to make sure that your teen is safe when behind the wheel.  Driving can be dangerous.  Being informed on the dangers of the road and how to prevent accidents is essential to keeping your teen safe.

The Stats:

  • The most at risk for an accident are: males, teen drivers with teen passengers, and newly licensed teens.
  • Teens are 3 times more likely to get into a fatal car crash as compared to adults.
  • 30% of costs associated with crash injuries are caused by teens.
  • In 2013, 373,645 crash injuries were caused by teen drivers.
  • A total of 6 fatal teen car accidents occur each day.
  • Teens are involved in 1 million crashes each year.

Risk Prevention:
There are some simple steps your teen can take to minimize driving risks.  Discuss safe driving habits with you teens and create positive, life-long habits.

  • Always wear a seatbelt.
  • Never drink and drive.
  • Limit the number of passengers.  With each additional teen passenger, the chances of getting into a crash increase dramatically.
  • Consider a graduated license program.  This type of program will ease teens into driving.
  • Make sure there is parent involvement.  When parents get involved with their teen’s driving, teens are typically safer on the road.

Reducing Insurance Costs:
Auto insurance can be expensive and insuring a teen driver can increase costs.  There are different things you can do to keep insurance costs down.

  • Enroll teens in a safe driving course.  Driver’s education classes are offered by private companies and some schools.
  • Ask about insurance discounts.  Speaking to an agent is the best way to know what discounts you may be eligible for.
  • Add teens to an existing policy.
  • Have your teen driver a safe or older car.  These cars are typically cheaper to insure.  Because teens are a huge liability risk, having you teen drive a brand new car can be extremely expensive.
  • Encourage safe driving habits.  The safer your teen is as a driver, the cheaper your insurance costs will be.  Bad drivers are typically more costly to insure.
  • Look into away at college discounts.  If your teen is going off to college and won’t be driving, you might be able to get a discount.

Make sure you teen is safe on the road.  Prom and graduation can create dangerous driving situations.  Unfortunately, though your teen may be a safe driver, you cannot control others on the road.  If an accident were to happen, having an auto insurance policy can make a difference.  If you need to get insurance for your teen, or need a new policy, InsuraMatch agents are always here to help you find the policy for you!  Get a quote online, or call an agent at 855-244-7671.
